Course Load Strategy for Grade 11 — The Pivot Year
Grade 11 is the year admissions officers watch most closely. Course choices, grades, and standardized test outcomes from this year carry disproportionate weight in the application. Plan it deliberately.
Why Grade 11 matters most
It is the most recent full year of grades available when applications are submitted. It is also the year where students have access to the most rigorous coursework and meaningful leadership opportunities.
Calibrating rigor
Take the most demanding load you can sustain at strong grades. Five strong APs or three IB Higher Levels at A grades is stronger than seven APs at B grades.
Calibrate honestly to your capacity. Burnout in Grade 11 affects testing, essays, and Grade 12 performance.
Aligning with intended major
Make sure your Grade 11 transcript shows depth in subjects relevant to your intended direction. A future engineer should have advanced math and physics. A future humanities applicant should have advanced literature and history.
Testing in parallel
Most students take the SAT (or ACT) for the first time in Grade 11, with a planned retake in fall of Grade 12. Schedule prep alongside coursework, not after — final exam season is too late.
Leadership and depth
Grade 11 is also when students typically take on leadership roles in their core extracurriculars. Use this year to convert two to three commitments into visible leadership and tangible outputs.
